Gold Coast City is home to an unlikely hero who is setting a new record for spirit and determination among 7 year-old boys.

Leota O’Connell is running in the Gold Coast City Marathon Junior Dash, a 2km run forming part of the massive marathon event this July.

But it’s not just the fun of the run that has Leota geared up for this race – he’s registered with Save the Children’s #RuntoSave initiative and is planning to fundraise for Australia’s less fortunate children.

Leo’s goal is to run the 2km Junior Dash non-stop in under 14 minutes and he hopes to raise $500 for kids who aren’t as lucky as he is. He has already won the hearts of his family and friends, having already blitzed his target, with a total so far of $501.95.

Leo’s Mum Cushla O’Connell is proud as punch of her boy and she says Leo’s training is going exceptionally well, with the little speedster already running the 2km in 14.37 minutes.

According to Leo, all kids should be able to eat healthy food, see a doctor when they’re sick, go to school and learn, sleep in a warm bed and be safe and happy.

A happy and healthy student himself, Leo is known around school at Kings Christian College in Reedy Creek for his kind nature and gentle soul. Add to that his determination to make a difference, backing by his loving, supportive family (including passionate social worker Mum) and his fast little feet, Leo the legend is ready to run, race and raise funds for kids in need.

Save the Children Australia is one of 30 members of the international Save the Children organization and our nations charity has been successfully implementing programs in Australia for over 60 years.
