Parkrun – it’s a free event that takes place in your local community weekly on Saturdays, where participants run 5kms in a park location and are timed. It’s not a race; it’s an event for all ages and fitness levels and can serve as time trials, training, fitness and fun.
Starting with a 5km time trial with 13 friends in a Southwest London park ten years ago, the parkrun concept has grown exponentially across the globe, with hundreds of runs taking place at the same time each Saturday across multiple countries and continents.
Parkrun celebrates it’s ten year anniversary in 2014 and tomorrow, Saturday 3 October 2014 marks International Parkrun Day. To celebrate parkrun’s 10th birthday and commemorate International Parkrun Day, a worldwide effort is underway to break the Guineas Book of World Records for the most participants in a 5km run across multiple locations.
Our local Robina parkrun is held at Varsity Lakes each Saturday, starting at Sports House on Christine Ave and weaving through the shared pathways alongside the lake and through the natural parklands. Click here to view the course map
Children, babies, prams and dogs are all welcome and all parkrun events use age grading to help runners compare their results. Participants will receive a percentage score using their time against the world record time for the relevant sex and age. The higher the score, the better your performance.
Tomorrow’s Varsity Lakes event promises free coffee for all runners courtesy of Josh from Ray White and Beetle Bean coffee van. Runners can also go in the draw to win a free pass to obstacle challenge race Raw taking place in March next year.
