As Mother’s Day approaches this Sunday, images spring to mind of Mums across Australia enjoying well-deserved sleep in’s, hand painted “I-love-you cards” from sticky little fingers and coffee and pancakes in bed.

However, many Gold Coast City Mums will skip the pancakes and sleep-in’s to celebrate this Sunday in a very different way – by walking or running in the Gold Coast City Mother’s Day Classic.

Dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research, this annual walk/run was started in 1998 by Women in Super and has grown over the years into a major national community fundraising and awareness event.

According to event organiser Louise Davidson, the Mother’s Day Classic is unique as it reaches beyond capital cities and in 2013 regional Australia saw record numbers, with overwhelming support that continues to grow.

Due to this huge growth in numbers, the Gold Coast City Mother’s Day Classic has relocated in 2014 and will be based at Pratten Park in Broadbeach, with the course heading south to Nobby Beach and back.

Participants will run and walk alongside the backdrop of Gold Coast City’s breathtaking beachfront, passing through stunning Hedges Avenue and back to bustling Broadbeach. What a great chance to savour the sights of Gold Coast City while at the same time contributing to vital breast cancer research, as well as honouring women who have or are still battling this illness.

Tribute cards can be worn on the day and messages can be left on an online tribute wall for loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer.

There will be prizes for participation, as well as places in the running events and age category medals, plus spot prizes and activities for all the family, including aerobics, roving performers, massage, entertainment, kids face painting and jumping castles.

If running or walking isn’t your thing, you can still get involved by volunteering or simply, coming along to cheer on the participants.

Create a new tradition this Mother’s Day; dust off your runners and get involved in the Gold Coast City Mother’s Day Classic.
