This weekend will see about 30,000 local, interstate and overseas people limbering up for the 36th annual Gold Coast City Marathon, kicking off Saturday 5 and racing through to Sunday 6 July.
Cool mornings and beautiful clear days in Gold Coast City are just one of the many attractions of the Marathon, which is expected this year to see over 100,000 spectators supporting the 30,000 participants, bringing $16.6 million to the Gold Coast City economy.
According to CEO of Events Management Queensland, Cameron Hart, many of the Marathon participants are from outside of Gold Coast City, with the event generating booming business for our tourism industry.
2014’s Gold Coast City Airport Marathon will see more than 60 countries represented across 8 races this weekend, with the largest ever group of elite runners from Japan, China and Singapore.
Hailed as one of the fastest, flattest and most scenic courses in the world, Gold Coast City Marathon runners are in for a visual treat, taking in some of Gold Coast City’s best sights.
Stretching from Southport to Burleigh Heads, Marathon participants will run adjacent to the beautiful Broadwater, crossing the iconic Southport Bridge and running alongside the picturesque backdrop of Main Beach and Surfers Paradise. Passing through beautiful Broadbeach, runners will then trek on through Gold Coast City’s famous “Millionaires Row”, along Hedges Avenue, before reaching the southern turn at magical Burleigh Heads and heading north to complete the race.
For the ninth consecutive year, the official charity of the Gold Coast City Marathon is Cancer Council Queensland and with runners in last years’ event raising in excess of $500,000, organisers of this years’ Marathon are expecting great things from the generosity of our community.
