Cycling in Gold Coast City has never been easier – as summer fast approaches, the sky is blue, the sun is out and there is every reason to get on our bikes and enjoy the outdoors.

The City of Gold Coast are helping us to become better bike riders, offering a series of free cycling workshops across the city, all in the name of active travel and changing the way we move.

The workshops form part of City of Gold Coast’s ‘Active Towns’ program, which has the specific objective of rapidly increasing the amount of walking and cycling trips made in our local communities. Robina and Varsity Lakes are focus areas for the ‘Active Towns’ program, given the extensive cycle and walking pathways in the regions connecting residential areas the thriving business district of CBDRobina.

November sees a number of cycling workshops roll out across Robina, to make cycling even easier for all Gold Coasters.

‘Better Bike Maintenance’ on 15 November will provide cyclists with cleaning, puncture repair, brake adjustment and chain maintenance skills.

On 19 November, at a convenient pre-work time slot of 5.30am to 7.30am, Olympic champion rider Sara Carrigan will host an ‘On the road’ cycling workshop for over 18 cyclists with a little more experience. The course will help riders increase confidence and perfect their technique, covering road rules, changing lanes and cornering, roundabouts, intersections, bicycle handling and hand signals.

Female over 18 riders who need a riding refresher and want to build their confidence and learn about safety can do so at the ‘Basic cycling skills for female riders’ workshop on 30 November, presented by an accredited instructor. This workshop aims to teach technique and bicycle handling, braking, gearing, road rules, etiquette, riding with one hand and cornering.

If you’re cycling in Gold Coast City, City of Gold Coast has got you covered with these upcoming Robina workshops, as well as additional future workshops across the next seven months and workshops for Gold Coast City residents who live outside of Robina.

For some of us contemplating cycling, especially on the road, safety is a big concern. As cyclists and indeed as motorists, it’s important to get schooled up in safety.
