Ten days of amazing art is about to hit the shores of Currumbin, with the Swell Sculpture Festival kicking off September 12.
Featuring over 50 sculpture displays along the picturesque coastline of Currumbin Beach, less than a 15 minute drive from CBDRobina, Swell has quickly become a staple event on Gold Coast City residents’ calendars.
Showcasing art from local, national and international artists, the exhibition is free for public viewing. Making the most of the beautiful natural backdrop, Swell is open all hours and will be lit up at night for a spectacular evening display under the southern sky.
Events are jam packed into the week and half of this artistic affair; there are twilight sculpture tours with guest curators leading the journeys, a ‘salute to sculpture’ sanctuary for meditation and yoga and Sunday session catch ups with artists and the ABC Gold Coast team, as well as pop up artist talks throughout the festival.
The programme will also feature the superb Swell Smalls Gallery, where good things come in small packages; an exhibition of sculptures on a smaller, more intimate and more affordable scale. Also, this year will see the northern Gold Coast have a taste of the Swell experience, with Northerly Swell showcasing Belgian artist Georges Cuvillier’s bamboo sculpture at the Helensvale Library and Cultural Centre.
Helensvale will also host free kids sculpture workshops and various masterclasses and workshops will also be held across the festival, including fire performance and poi, staff and kung fu workshops.
Don’t miss the famed festival finale, Dusk, where you can expect nothing short of magic. Sunday 21 September sees the final day of Swell and it will go out with a bang, with Dusk featuring the Felicity Lawless Band and their folk-fun, gypsy rhythm. Upatree Arts giant puppets will dance through the sculptures and the sensational Brazilian sounds of Zambabem will sizzle with their samba to ska repertoire. Samba Blisstas street troupe will light up the streets with their wild beats and riotous rhythm, complete with costumes and dance and as evening descends, a trio of fire, music and drums by Energy Entertainment will round out this amazing festival, setting the night on fire at Currumbin Beach.
It’s culture at it’s finest and it’s sure to be swell; soak up the atmosphere from September 12 at Swell Sculpture Festival and enjoy stunning and spectacular art from Gold Coast City and around the world.
