On Wednesday last week, Bond University took us to the movies, hosting some of our Robina Group team, along with approximately 200 other guests at the Arts Centre Gold Coast.

Bond showed a special screening of the Sapphires, the 2012 motion picture loosely based on the true story of four Indigenous women who form a singing group and travel to Vietnam in 1968 during the war.

The Sapphires screening forms part of the lead up to Bond’s upcoming Indigenous Gala event, which the Robina university host this Friday 7 November in Bond’s Sports Hall, featuring special guests Lois Peeler AM and Laurel Robinson, original members of the Sapphires.

Keynote speakers Peeler and Robinson will share inspiring stories about their singing journeys, their Indigenous culture and vivid, colourful lives and will perform a song along with students from Wowara Aboriginal College, where Peeler is Executive Principal.

The Indigenous Gala is a prestigious and premium event on the Bond University events calendar and in the calendars of the Gold Coast City community, with over 400 confirmed guests attending the glitzy fundraiser. The event has proven so popular this year that the original venue was changed to accommodate the demand for tickets, with the Gala now taking place in the 450 capacity Sports Hall.

Promising a celebration of epic proportions, Bond’s Indigenous Gala will feature live performances, three-course gourmet dinner with a bush-food flavour, drinks and fun.

The Gala will also showcase Indigenous art, culture, music, learning and talent, with current and past Indigenous students set to share their stories, their journey and insight into their communities and aspirations for the future.

Local Indigenous musicians will perform on the night and special guests include Patron and long-term supporter of Bond’s Indigenous program, Dr Patrick Corrigan AM as well as leading Indigenous elders and members of the community.

All proceeds from the Gala event go towards Bond University’s Indigenous students and scholarships, raising funds to increase and support higher education opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

According to Bond University’s Pro Vice Chancellor, Catherine O’Sullivan, Bond are committed to addressing the significant disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous higher education enrolments and outcomes.

As proud sponsors of the Indigenous Gala event, Robina Group share Bond’s passion for closing the gap in non-Indigenous and Indigenous educational outcomes.

Bond University’s Indigenous Scholarships have raised more than $200,000 to date through corporate contribution and sponsorship and the Indigenous Gala will further contribute to supporting Indigenous education.
