An unlikely combination is set to hit the shores of Gold Coast City this weekend – for the grand finale of the Bleach festival, opera is moving out of the theatre and on to Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta for ‘Opera on the Beach’.

Think crisp, clear autumn skies, rolling surf and soft white sand. Picture the sun setting on another stunning Gold Coast City day. Then imagine the sweet sounds of ‘Mozart’s The Magic Flute’, one of the world’s favourite operas, shimmering across the moonlit beach.

An enchanting tale of battle, bravado and magic, Opera Australia have teamed up with a selected chorus from Gold Coast City community choirs to perform this story, with a uniquely Australian flavour.

The organisers of the brilliant Bleach Festival have done it again. They’ve utilised the beautiful Gold Coast City coast and climate and paired it with culture that is usually more common in capital cities.

In addition to the opera, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, Greenmount Beach by day will showcase fine arts in their coastal form.

The magnificent ‘Magic Flute’ themed sand sculpture will be displayed from today, Thursday 8 May to Sunday 11 May as part of the opera season.Furthermore, master sand sculptors ‘Sand in Your Eyes Sculpting Company’ are hosting free children’s sand castle making workshops from 9am to 11am Saturday and Sunday. Winners will be selected from each day and presented with family passes to that evening’s Opera on the Beach show.

From Friday to Sunday, celebrated UK environmental artist Tony Plant will also be showcasing at Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta. Tony’s stunning sand drawings take contemporary art to a new level – using the land as his canvas, each masterpiece is fabulous yet fleeting, fading away as the tides change.

A perfect Mother’s Day gift and a perfect way to spend a glorious Gold Coast City weekend. Get cultured at Opera on the Beach this weekend.
