Save The Waves Coalition announced that Gold Coast City has been approved as the newest World Surfing Reserve and is expected to be formally dedicated in 2016.
The announcement came during a four day Global Wave Conference with leading International surf and environmental academics held in the House of Commons in London, UK.
Gold Coast City will join the ranks of Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, Ericeira in Portugal, Manly Beach here in Australia, Huanchaco in Peru, Bahio Todos Santos, Baja California in Mexico and Punta de Lobo in Chile and become the 8th World Surfing Reserve.
The World Surfing Reserves (WSR) is a proactive program of Save The Waves that identifies the best surf zones around the world and aims to preserve them by protecting the key attributes of the recognised area.
Three applications were considered including Guarda do Embáo in Brazil and Noosa in Australia.
Gold Coast City was recognised for it’s world champions and perfect point breaks.
Processing Gold Coast City’s nomination took almost two years with Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks being inspected with almost 16 kilometres of beach front.
A high amount of community support was pivotal in helping Gold Coast city being chosen, as this is a crucial aspect of the selection criteria.

The Save The Waves Coalition launched the WSR initiative in 2009 together with National Surfing Reserves Australia and additional partners.
