Over two huge days this Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October 2014, Gold Coast City will host 16 international rugby sevens sides, all battling it out in Robina as part of the International Rugby Board’s HSBC Sevens World Series. Held annually, the HSBC Sevens World Series sees national sevens teams compete in nine tournaments across eight countries, with points allocated to teams based on their finishing position in each tournament and the winner being the team with the most points at the series end.
Kicking off the World Series, this weekend’s Gold Coast Sevens promises exceptional sevens rugby, with some of the world’s best players in the game showcasing their skill and speed on the field. What’s more, teams performance in this years world series will directly affect qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, guaranteeing an even more competitive and edge-of-your-seat thrilling spectacle for Robina’s sevens tournament this weekend.
Be sure to get behind the the girls this weekend by supporting the women’s sevens matches, as the female teams pioneer the pathway towards the very first inclusion of women’s sevens at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Competition aside, there’s more than sporting prowess on display at the Gold Coast Sevens. It’s become traditional around the world for rugby fans to don fancy dress as spectators at Sevens tournaments, resulting in an epic and eclectic mix of weird and wonderful costumes throughout the crowd. From Smurfs in full blue body paint, Native American Indians complete with feather headdress and mobs of poncho & sombrero clad Mexicans to characters directly out of Star Trek, the creative get crazy with Sevens dress-up spirit.
