Food art. Foodtography. Foodiction. Call it what you will, but there’s no denying Aussie’s have an obsession with sharing food images on social media. Scroll through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and you’re sure to taste with your eyes; a visual smorgasbord of breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between.

Love it or hate it, it’s very much a part of our modern online community – the sharing of imagery to tell a story to our friends. Food pics are among the most common on our social networks, with at least 90 new photos uploaded with food hashtags every minute.

Communications giant Virgin Mobile Australia and our good friends at food rescue charity OzHarvest have teamed up and are taking the foodtograhpy concept and turning it into something tangible, with the world-first initiative #mealforameal

Here’s how it works. Take a photo of your delicious meal. Post it to your Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #mealforameal. Tag @virginmobileaus and @ozharvest. Virgin Mobile Australia and OzHarvest will then deliver a real meal to someone in need.

There is no rules as to what your meal image must look like – good, bad, ugly, small, large, delicious – as long as it’s food and you post it with the #mealforameal hashtag, Virgin Mobile Australia will fund OzHarvest to get a meal to one of the two million Aussie’s who are reliant on food relief annually.

Branding our mobile phones as ‘little pocket miracles’, Virgin Mobile Australia Chief Executive David Scribner says initiatives like #mealforameal and others under their ‘Making mobile better’ campaign will highlight how smartphones have revolutionised our lifestyles and how we can use them to do good.

The #Mealforameal campaign aims to combat a number of social issues. Firstly, the goal is to get food in the bellies of those who need it and can’t get it. Secondly, it aims help re-connect Australians to their technology and fight digital overload, which is defined as the feeling that your technology is draining your life, rather than enhancing it. Thirdly, Virgin Mobile’s partnership with community food rescue organization OzHarvest sets out with the mission to help educate our community about the challenges we face in terms of food distribution, waste and sustainability.

The goal is to hit 400,000 meals. Never before has it been so useful to snap a food pic and spam your follower’s newsfeeds. Be it a donut, an 8 course degustation menu or a hearty pumpkin soup you whipped up on a cold winters night, get posting today with hashtag #mealforameal and help Virgin Mobile Australia and OzHarvest save the world, one meal at a time.
