The team at OzHarvest are continuing to revolutionise food in our community with their latest project feeding knowledge to our youngest generation.

The dynamic and progressive food rescue charity last week hosted two “Kiducation” events in their Brisbane kitchen, offering 10 kids aged 4-8 years, along with their parents, the unique opportunity to get messy in the kitchen and learn all about food and nutrition. Best of all, these lucky kids also got to learn about OzHarvest and the work they do in the community to help those less fortunate.

According to OzHarvest’s Lee Danahay, the sessions were a resounding success, with OzHarvest now planning to hold more events in school holidays to come.

Kiducation kicked off with kids learning how to make pizzas; they burned some energy kneading their dough, then watched with wonder as the dough rested and rose.

Learning safe knife skills, they chopped all their own pizza toppings and the fruit to make their crumbles. Getting a good feel for prepping their food, they got their hands in and mixed the topping for their crumbles and then chose their pizza toppings and assembled their very own pizzas.

As their pizzas and crumbles cooked in the oven, the kids got to decorate their gingerbread vans, all the while absorbing the values of OzHarvest and what it means to be fortunate enough to have food for their bellies.

After a very active and busy 3 hours, the kids were rewarded by chowing down on their amazing creations, sharing with their parents who had watched and witnessed their culinary skills as they developed and taking home their individually decorated gingerbread vans. As an added bonus, there was enough leftover food for OzHarvest to donate to a charity close-by, meaning these kids made a real difference to some lives in our community.

More than just a boredom buster, Kiducation offers lessons in the kitchen and lessons in life.

Get your kids involved in the next Kiducation event; not only will you then have a helping hand at dinner time, your child will learn skills in nutrition, cooking and food rescue and the value in caring for others that are less fortunate than us.
