In 2003 Mia Connor took her first makeup course with Napoleon in Sydney to learn how to apply her own makeup. Two years later Mia started her diploma with Peter Frampton on the Gold Coast and was on the path to achieving her goal of becoming a successful makeup artist.

Needing a professional base to work from, Mia opened The Makeup Bar in 2007. From there she has gone from strength to strength, earning the title of Makeup Artist of the Year for The Australian Beauty Industry Awards (ABIA) in 2015.

For the past two years Mia has expanded her focus to include education and travels frequently to offer masterclasses in her signature techniques ‘Beautiful Brides’ and ‘Smoke Bomb Eyes’.

Why did you choose Robina for your studio?

I’ve had my studio in Robina for over eight years.  It’s such a great central location but not right in the hustle and bustle so traffic is a little more relaxed. There’s heaps of parking so it makes it a perfect spot for my event clients to get to and only three minutes to Robina Town Centre.

Tell us your secret formula to success

I believe if you’re passionate about anything you can make it your profession as long as you’re good at it and know how to market yourself.

How important has your online following been to your business success?

Social media has been a huge pinnacle in the success of my business and has been the best and most affordable platform for me to market. It’s visual and your reach potential is endless. I was using social media to market my makeup artistry way back in Myspace days, then Facebook was the next big thing and now Instagram is my best platform.

What inspires and motivates you as a business woman and makeup artist?

I’m inspired on a daily basis by other artists, both on social media and the artists that I teach regularly in my masterclasses.

I’ve always been quite driven and ambitious when it comes to building the lifestyle I want to live through a job that I absolutely love.  I’m constantly thinking of new business ideas and marketing strategies.  Being a freelance artist, it really keeps me on my toes because it’s up to me how hard I work.
