Varsity Gymnastics and Trampoline Club is flying high after bouncing their way from 60 to 320 enrolments in less than three years on the back of a number of accolades.
Robina local and club owner, Gillian Needham and her husband Paul head the family-owned business, which caters for students at all ages and levels – from those looking for recreation and fitness, to those wanting to participate in competitions for gymnastics, trampolining and tumbling.
Tiny tots from 2 to 4-years-old can get involved in kindy gym, while athletes with a physical and/or learning challenges can take advantage of Rebound Therapy classes.
The club’s Movement for Life Program is available for mature adults, 55 years and above.
Gillian says the club has taken home 187 medals from regional, state and national gymnastics and trampolining events in the past year.
“It’s been such a surreal experience to watch our little gymnastics and trampoline club continue to grow in line with our member’s success at various competitions,” she said.
“In the past year, we have seen three athletes compete in the Queensland State Championships and 18 compete at the Regional Championships in gymnastics winning 44 medals across the top three placings.
“In trampolining, four of our athletes qualified while two have competed at the National Championships and five at the Queensland State Championships, with 17 medals in top three placings.”
The medals are a result of Gillian and Paul’s expertise, along with their crew of eight coaches, including four ‘advanced coaches’, who are qualified to teach high level skills.
Paul is an ex-professional English soccer player, advanced gymnastics and trampoline coach while Gillian is an advanced silver gym and trampoline coach, international judge, course presenter and rebound therapist.
The couple are joined by their two sons, Wesley who had the honour of representing Australia in Trampoline sport and is now an advanced coach, and Mitchell, the first point of contact for the club.
Gillian said the recent purchase of new equipment for the club would improve safety and accelerate the learning of new skills.
“We have invested in new equipment for our athletes, including a new double mini trampoline and a 15 metre air floor, which makes it easier to learn new tumbling skills and passes,” she said.
“We have also purchased a new above ground catcher pit with foam so our gymnasts can practice somersaults safely and with confidence.
“With our growing student numbers and expanding amount of equipment, we are on the lookout for a new venue in Robina or Varsity as soon as possible so we can accommodate our existing members and any new athletes keen to learn gymnastics and trampoline.”
