Fighting fit at the heart of Gold Coast
Owner-operators Krystyna and Craig Baker have brought a new type of fitness class to Robina with Punchfit Academy.
Bridging the gap between fitness and self defence, Punchfit is the first licenced academy of its kind allowing newcomers a low-barrier to entry for a mix of fitness and punching technique.
Punchfit is the brainchild of Bruce Townhill, who created the Punch fighting equipment line which has been the staple of fighting equipment for over 30 years. Created as a course for personal trainers, its success has now made it available for everybody in the form of the Punchfit Academy.
Both Krystyna and Craig are qualified instructors with long backgrounds in martial arts and fighting. Craig has over 15 years in Muay Thai training and Krystyna has over 12 years, with Craig having experienced 13 fights and Krystyna 3 fights. Craig is still an active fighter.
“There’s nothing like us in Australia,” said Krystyna.
“Many that come to us so far have been complete novices and they feel comfortable coming here.”
“We’re a sort of middle-ground, bridging the gap between people wanting to do the training, but maybe are intimated of going to a full fight gym, where they don’t want to get pressured into sparring or possible injuries. But they are looking for more than a personal trainer can offer them.”
That’s where Punchfit comes in. They even have classes especially for personal trainers on how to hold pads properly, and throw punches properly so they can do more for their clients.
The classes are based on proven techniques and safety with a focus on enjoyment and building up your confidence and strength.
“The stuff we do here, although it’s fitness based, it’s all based on proper training technique used for years by fighters and has been put together so there are no injuries,” said Craig.
“Even though we base it on fitness, people are still shown how to throw a proper punch or kick.”
While Punchfit in Robina allows beginners and advanced participants to learn without the pressure of sparring or the injuries that can come with it, there are more advanced contact classes coming in the future for those that wish to take things further.
“We have something called squad which we will be introducing soon for those that do want want to take it to the next level,” said Krystyna.
Age isn’t a barrier either, with a wide range of participants in the classes.
“We do classes for kids from 8 to 12 years and adults up to their 50’s have been coming too,” said Craig.
“We have people that come here from Brisbane to train and even Byron Bay, as there’s nothing quite like it elsewhere.”
The Punchfit experience
One of our insideR team members, Greg took one for the team and trialled Punchfit.
He reported back that the fitness class started with a warm up, which in this case, was skipping ropes. This was followed by learning some correct punching techniques and then he moved onto some high intensity punching and combos, just like fighters do. Greg was positive about the whole experience and now has the rest of us wanting to have a go!
Punchfit classes are 45 minutes, with kids classes being 30 minutes.
Punchfit also offers one hour yoga classes. With plans for more classes for yoga and strength and conditioning coming in.
