Councillor News

Robina is beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas. Decorations are slowly but surely coming out, the launch of the City’s Christmas lights competition is in full swing, along with arrangements for the Division 11 Christmas event. Here’s what’s been happening and coming up in our division.

Support for our community

I’m pleased to announce that several Robina community groups were successful in their applications in Round 1 of my Divisional Donations – adding up to $20,000 worth of community support.

The criteria for applications were focused on projects and initiatives addressing community safety and local law and order concerns.

Projects will see the installation of CCTV cameras at schools and sports clubs, child-safety gates and the purchase of other safety equipment.

These groups are the backbone of our community, and I couldn’t be more pleased to have supported their projects. Round 2 of my divisional donations will launch in early January 2017 with a broader focus on social and environmental outcomes for the area.

10,000 new trees for Robina

Robina was recently the proud host of the Landcare Forum, and it was there I committed to injecting further funds towards the planting of 10,000 trees in the division.

We have already seen 24,000 trees planted at Robina City Parklands this financial year alone. This new allocation will be a welcome investment for the surrounding environment and the beautification of the site, which is situated across from Cbus Super Stadium,  a Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ venue.

In addition to this and as part of the Stronger Communities Grant from the Federal Government, Robina High School students will plant trees at the parklands at the end of this month.

If you’re interested in joining a team of environmental warriors to plant trees, you can receive updates on future community planting days on my Facebook page. Visit facebook.com/CrHermannVorster

Christmas in Division 11 – return of Varsity Lakes Christmas Carols

Varsity College and Hope Church are proud to announce the return of the Varsity Lakes Christmas Carols on Saturday 3 December 2016 at Central Park Oval.

Bring the whole family along for a great night of free entertainment including performances by Varsity College students and the Hope Church band.

Activities for the kids start from 4.30pm with a visit from Santa at 6.30pm. Glow sticks will be available to purchase and proceeds will raise funds for the school P&C.  Will Ferrell’s ‘Elf’ will be shown on the outdoor cinema from 7pm.

If you’re feeling hungry or looking for a Christmas gift, there will be a selection of delicious food trucks and markets to browse.

I have the pleasure of supporting this event from my divisional budget. For more information, go to the Facebook event http://bit.ly/VarsityLakesChristmasCarols or call Varsity College on (07) 5562 3575.
