Our favourite Japanese/French fusion restaurant Cocotte Dining will play host to celebrity Japanese wine maker Ayana Misawa at an exclusive cocktail event this Thursday evening. Ayana Misawa, wine maker for Grace Wine in Yamanashi, Japan, will be showcasing a range of KOSHU wines, paired with canapés made by three local Japanese chefs.
Hibiki from Itoshin Japanese Restaurant and Yasu who is former chef/owner of Y’s Japanese restaurant will join Cocotte’s own Shunichi Tanabe to create mouth-watering canapés for the event, with guests enjoying 6-7 dishes throughout the standing cocktail event.
Cocotte’s outdoor garden, which is softly lit at night, will provide a charming backdrop for the evening and guests will have the opportunity to meet and chat with a world-renowned Japanese winemaker while sampling superb vino from Grace Wine.
Grace winery was established in 1923 and is at the heart of today’s Japenese wine industry. One of the first family-owned wineries in Katsunuma in Yamanashi prefecture, Grace Wines was established by Ayana’s Grandfather and taken to the world market by her father Shigekazu Misawa. Ayana is now the third generation wine maker in her family.
It had always been Ayana’s Grandfather’s wish to make a dryer style wine with the KOSHU grape, which was known as a very difficult grape to make good quality wine with. In his time, only sweeter styles of wine were available in Japan and overall wine wasn’t a widely consumed beverage.
Ayana graduated from Bordeaux Wine University and travelled through many wine regions and countries, including Australia, to learn different wine making techniques and was able to perfect techniques which allowed her to create beautiful wines from the KOSHU grapes and fulfil the dreams of her Grandfather.
In 2014, Ayana won the gold medal in Decanter World Wine Awards, which was the first gold medal won in Japanese wine history. Grace Wine has gone on to establish a world wide reputation for fine wine.
