Sound of music

When Gold Coast music therapist Monica Zidar became a mum more than a decade ago, she soon identified a need for music-based early childhood programs across the region.

Ms Zidar, who founded ‘Music with Monica’ in Robina, said the popular sessions started with families at her local play group inside the Robina Soccer Club House.

“When my children were babies I was looking for a live music program to take them to as I knew how much music can benefit young children,” she said.

“There is ample research which shows the impact music can have on a child’s development and learning ability, including literacy and numeracy.

“Music therapy classes provide an ideal environment for learning to happen, helping target communication, motor and social skills, and creating a positive experience for all involved.

“From that first session 12 years ago, we are now running 15 programs across the Gold Coast, expanding to locations from Casuarina to Coomera Springs.”

Ms Zidar still leads a majority of sessions with her guitar, including the classes held in Robina.

“We encourage movement to music first. We might do some instrument play, support engagement by singing familiar songs, play with puppets or even sing a story.

“Working with children with special needs in early intervention, I wanted to create an inclusive program in a community-based environment where those children can join in with peers, allowing them to thrive and succeed with their mums close by.

“It’s really special witnessing the joy that brings families.”

Ms Zidar runs five programs from Robina Community Centre on Mondays and Tuesdays, targeting children aged from 0 to 4, with a limit of 10 families per program.

The 45 minute classes cost $185 per child per term, with discounts for families.
