Private Australian health operator boosts Gold Coast City medical precinct

You may have heard in recent weeks that health care specialist Australian Unity has acquired Robina’s Campus Alpha building along with two medically approved development sites in Robina’s burgeoning health hub.

This show of confidence in the centrally located precinct is big news for Robina. It is also reflective of the ongoing fulfilment of the visionary community masterplan, of renowned master planner Moshe Safdie.

The new acquisitions by Australian Unity follow last year’s purchase of a key medical site on which the Robina Private Hospital is currently under construction.

The three sites, plus the Campus Alpha building bring Australian Unity’s investment in Robina to over $64million, with that figure set to climb significantly as they continue to unveil future plans for all of their Robina assets.

So the $64million question is, what exactly does this new investment mean for residents of Robina and Gold Coast City?

Firstly, we will shortly see the completion of the $30million Robina Private Hospital.  The brand new building, located on a 6,663sqm site next to Robina Hospital, has been unveiled in recent weeks with scaffolding coming down and the final touches being applied.  Doors will open in October, with the hospital to offer specialist mental health care services including treatment for geriatric, adolescent and perinatal mood disorders and a range of crucial inpatient and outpatient services.  Robina Private Hospital will be operated by Healthe Care, one of Queensland’s leading mental health care providers, with a national reputation for excellence.

Secondly, construction of a major medical centre on a neighbouring 3,920sqm site purchased by Australian Unity will be underway this year.  The $5.5million development will transform the site into a medical centre, operated by Primary Health Care, incorporating general practice, radiology, pathology, dental and pharmacy services.

Thirdly, the expansion and development of Robina’s health hub is set to continue for years to come.   Robina Private Hospital has additional stages planned and the third development site acquired by Australian Unity will soon have plans of its own revealed.

Australian Unity’s ownership of Robina medical hub’s Campus Alpha building, Robina Private Hospital and the other two development sites means that they are now a major precinct stakeholder.  Given they are Australia’s largest healthcare property fund with over a billion dollars of funds under management, their stakeholdership is a healthy prospect for Robina.

With Gold Coast City being such a geographically linear configuration, and the heart of the city being such a growth corridor, having a centralised and easy to access medical precinct in Robina is critical to our city’s health.

Health facilities create jobs and underpin demand for homes and business services in Robina.  The announcement of such significant expansion of the medical hub is the culmination of years of planning for Robina to become a key centre for medical services, innovation and research & development.  This growth and momentum benefits not only Robina but Gold Coast City as a whole.

Urbis predicts that by 2050 the number of health care workers will increase 195% and Robina’s economy will increase 280% to $5.4 Billion.
